Abstract
Abstract The fashion industry is recognized as one of the sectors with the greatest environmental impact due to its high consumption of natural resources and the large volume of textile waste generated throughout the production and consumption cycle. In this context, upcycling has emerged as a sustainable design strategy that transforms discarded materials into products with greater aesthetic and functional value, extending their life cycle and reducing environmental impact. This research analyzes the role of upcycling in fashion design as a strategy for the reuse of post-consumer textile wast e in Medellín, Colombia. The study adopts a mixed-method, descriptive-analytical approach that combines documentary review, case study analysis of local initiatives, and consumer perception assessment regarding garments produced through upcycling techniques. The research examines existing practices, opportunities, and challenges associated with the implementation of upcycling in the local fashion sector, while also exploring consumer acceptance and the perceived aesthetic value of upcycled garments. The findings suggest that upcycling represents a viable alternative for promoting sustainable fashion by reducing textile waste, encouraging circular economy principles, and fostering creativity in fashion design. However, barriers related to consumer awareness, production processes, market perceptions, and scalability continue to limit its widespread adoption. The study concludes that strengthening educational strategies, promoting sustainable consumption habits, and supporting innovative design practices can contribute to the integration of upcycling into Medellín’s fashion industry and support the transition toward more sustainable production and consumption models.
